Diet Smoothies

Healthy Living

Besides being nutritious and quick to prepare, diet smoothies are a delicious way to curtail your hunger while reducing your caloric intake. Smoothies are very filling and fruit smoothies provide vitamins and minerals to keep you healthy. Dieters often feel hungry and this can lead to snacking and other unhealthy dietary habits. Making a smoothie instead of reaching for a snack will keep you on your weight loss track.

How to Make a Smoothie
The ingredients in a smoothie run the gamut from fruits to vegetables to other dietary supplements. Using a blender is the best method of concocting this drink. First determine the type of liquid you prefer to use; milk is a good choice as is fruit juice. You do need to be aware when using juice to make diet smoothies that they may contain sugar. If you are lactose intolerant or have high cholesterol, soymilk is a good alternative to use. Depending upon the quantity you are making, add one to two cups of liquid and an equal amount of ice to the blender.

Now for the creative part of the process: add your favorite vegetable, fruit or combination of vegetables and fruits. Experimenting with different fruit mixtures is fun and inventive. Blend on high for 10 seconds and your drink is ready to pour. To thicken your smoothie, add frozen fruit or more ice and for a creamier mixture add non-fat yogurt or frozen yogurt.

Smoothie Ideas
You can also add protein or fiber supplements to diet smoothies. Wheat germ, oats, and flax seeds work well in breakfast smoothies. Unsweetened cocoa powder and low-fat peanut butter can enhance the flavor of your afternoon pick-me-up smoothie. In addition, you can make your drink ahead of time and freeze it in a freezer-proof cup for up to three days. Let it thaw naturally during the course of the day and your afternoon treat will be ready when you are. diet smoothie
