Homemade Fruit Smoothies
Learning how to make homemade fruit smoothies is a great way to get
more fruit
into your diet. Smoothies make for an excellent healthy snack and are
simple to prepare. The range of flavors you can create is limited only
by the ingredients you have on hand – you can stick to one flavor or
combine different fruits to make your own blend. Let’s take a look at
the process of making homemade fruit smoothies to get you started.
How to make homemade fruit smoothies
What You’ll Need
In order to make a smoothie, you will of course require a blender.
Apart from this, the ingredients that go into the blender will consist
of chopped fruit pieces of your choosing, plus either ice or ice cream,
as well as yogurt if you so desire. You can use plain, unsweetened
yogurt or add a flavored yogurt to add an extra twist to the taste.
These ingredients – ice, ice cream or yogurt – are used to thicken the
smoothie. Without them, you’d end up with a juice. If the fruit you’re
using is frozen, you may not need a thickener.
If you’re a health conscious smoothie maker, you may decide that ice is
the best option for a thickener. You can also make a point of choosing
a low-fat yogurt – preferably one with acidophilus, as this helps
digestion.
As well as the fruit and thickening agents, you’ll need to add liquid
to the mix to allow for a smooth blend. This is typically done with
milk for a ‘milkshake’ style smoothie, or with fruit juice. You can
experiment by combining different fruits with various juices to
generate new tastes.
Types of Fruit
Fruits often used for making smoothies include bananas, apples,
oranges, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. Berries in
particular are known for being high in antioxidants as well as a host
of vitamins. Bananas are rich sources of potassium. Kiwi is also a
great choice for a more exotic flavor. Pineapple can be used to give
the smoothie a more ‘tropical’ taste, ideal for a day relaxing next to
a swimming pool.
The Process
Once you have chosen your ingredients, the process of actually making
the smoothie is quite simple. You should have equal amounts of your
chosen liquid and fruit pieces – about a quarter of a cup of each, for
a smaller smoothie mix. These will be combined in the blender with half
a cup of thickener, such as ice or yogurt (or a combination of
thickeners). Note that the relative amounts here depend on the
ingredients – if you were using frozen fruit, you would use more of
this to balance out the lack of a thickening agent like ice, so you
might simply add a cup of frozen fruit to a quarter cup of liquid. Then
all you have to do is flick the switch and let the blender do the hard
work.
Getting Creative
Once you’ve learned how to make fruit smoothies, you can start
experimenting with flavors and extra ingredients to make your own
creations. Flavor enhancers, such as vanilla essence, can help in this
respect – but of course you can come up with original, tasty beverages
using all natural ingredients.
